This is another one of Hemingway’s seemingly irrational marital spats (similar to the one in “Cat in the Rain,” which begins with “I’ll get it [the cat]” and ends with “Why don’t you shut up and get something to read?” and also to the unspecified argument that contributes the underlying tension to “Out of Season”; see chapter 1). Here, however, Hemingway indicates that this one has at least a partial origin in unpredictable, mercurial female hormones:

“I’m over it,” Catherine said. “I’m not going to act that way. Why should I act that way to you? It was ludicrous and undignified. It was so silly. I won’t even ask you to forgive me. Besides I have to go up to the room anyway—”

“Now?”

“Because I’m a god-damned woman. I thought if I’d be a girl and stay a girl I’d have a baby at least. Not even that.”

. . . [Catherine:] “We’ll read our mail and be good nice intelligent tourists who are disappointed because they came to Madrid at the wrong time of year.” (KL/EH 422.1/10, 16)
